ANIMATION in disadvantaged neighborhoods

Who writes this post is Lorenzo and Lorenzo Manitese (some raga Monte Po) or Monte Chicken (for volunteers Manitese). I thank especially the great Luciano inventor and creator of this blog ... in 6 years I have never given birth Monte Po idea so brilliant. I hope this blog can become a meeting place for volunteers, for the children of Monte Po (and beyond), and for all those visitors who want to enrich us with comments or experiences personal in the suburbs.

Since 1998, Sicily has launched a Manitese ever closer cooperation with other associations working in the outskirts of Catania: Iqbal (Librino), GAPA (St. Christopher) and Coop. Perspective (SGGalermo). Initiatives promoted by the exploitation of child labor in a network with these partners, was born the desire to engage in more active and concrete at the local level, to apply the principles and objectives of Manitese in the "South" to the "South" in Catania . Of all the suburbs, our choice fell on Mount Po, as in 2001-2 were not present (and there are still) other associations nor popular meeting places.

2002
activity in the district was launched by the financing of the project "Children at play, parents to work" by the Ministry of Welfare . This project was carried out during 2002 and involved 40 children (children) in the neighborhood, focusing particularly in Largo and Largo Pitre Favara. From 27 July to 5 August, was organized within the district, a field of work and study that involved 25 campers from all over Italy, as well as a dozen volunteers from the group Mani Tese of Catania. The field experience is that the association Mani Tese offers each year, during the summer at some of the 50 groups located throughout Italy, not necessarily for young volunteers to live and share the values \u200b\u200bof simplicity and solidarity, which promotes the 'association, which provides for the recovery or business funds to finance a development project or study, explore themes that promotes Mani Tese. In our case, the campers were hosted by the Institute Professional Catering, and for 10 days, have brought intense animation, trying to convey, through several workshops and final games, messages related to sobriety. To be included in the organization of a public meeting with the citizens of Monte Po, a closing party and screening of two boxes inside the auditorium, inaugurated by our association on this occasion.

2003
At the end of the project, the volunteers decided to continue their activities in the district without any financial support, making use of the premises made available by the Comprehensive Vittorino da Feltre (plexus "Lizzio Bruno") to not to stop their activities during the cold winter months. This allowed us to manage the theater workshop and remedial teaching in the best way, working diligently and prepare activities for the completion of field work in the 2nd quarter 1 to August 10 with the participation of 25 other campers from all over Italy.

2004
activities were held at the local parish of St. Mary Nuovaluce. The ability to use the video equipment and computers has enabled the parish, the volunteers, to prepare for the first time in the district computer labs and film club activities, not to mention the remedial teaching.

2005
activity has focused on the animation of the street and the organization of tournaments at the local parish. .
On 26 June, part of the "Volunteer solidarity and citizenship, from theory to practice "(in collaboration with the Centre Astalli CO.PE, voluntary groups Vincentian, Legambiente, Mo.vi), was held a day of entertainment by the company of Trani" The swallow ride ".
This activity, held in Market Square, was attended by about 50 boys and some of their families.
From July 21 all'l August, has made the 3rd field of study and work titled "Peri for ppa periphery centered on the themes of the suburbs and on the animation of the road, with the participation of 35 young people from all over Italy.
On this occasion we used the premises made available by the hotel. The inner housing to the neighborhood allowed contact with about 15 to 20 boys between 16 and 20 years, have not yet attained by our activities. One of the objectives achieved, not budgeted, it was precisely their awareness of the issues of volunteering and active citizenship and solidarity and their subsequent involvement in the association for the neighborhood.

2006
Activities entertainment street, in Largo Favara, thanks to this work have been involved about 50 children (aged between 8 and 14 years). The activity remained constant throughout the year, despite the logistical and organizational difficulties typical of street work.
From October it resumed activities at the parish, made available by the advent of the new parish priest Father Nino Vitanza. Here the business has expanded to involve families and young adolescents.
Thanks to the cooperation of some families of the parish and the neighborhood we have proposed, on December 15, the Caravan Antimafia. The caravan, given annually by Freedom, CGIL and Arci, was articulated with games and songs for children (from the neighborhood, but also from Christ and St. Librino hole), praising the freedom and redemption from all the gangs. The event, which had a large following of both children and their families, was completed at the premises of the parish with a social dinner, based on product Libera Terra (that is produced in the lands confiscated from the mafia)

2007
Also for 2007, the business was conducted mainly at the local parish of St. Mary Nuovaluce. It 'been a particularly difficult year for the untimely death of Nino, a boy of 16 years that followed in our meetings since 2002, when he became ill with leukemia. But the presence of a group of volunteers around the boys and the intensification of meetings following the tragic event, with the programming of some moments of entertainment and excursions outside Catania served to help kids (and us volunteers) to overcome moments more difficult.

Results: In this path
performed up to now, the fact that more and more kids in the neighborhood, we not only know and participate in the moments of the offer, but asked to expand our presence throughout the week, as well as in chorus, they ask their parents, in our opinion is the most important result achieved in a quarter where it is very difficult to build relationships with kids, and they gain trust and appreciation. Most of them have no other alternative to our presence, while there are many kids who wander into the neighborhood without any specific reason in the afternoon, looking for new attractions. If this framework is the result adds precious and unexpected entry in 2005 of a boy of fourteen Monte Po as a volunteer in the association fully Mani Tese, without which he had been proposed, but on the contrary, he freely and tenaciously sought, and the latest one, the sensitivity shown by 2 other guys and sixteen in the activities which resulted in shifts in market and transport, this will not only charge us enormous satisfaction, but allows us to understand how good the path made these years.
